Wedding Veils – Length, Placement, Styles

Marriage is sacred and your wedding day will be the only time you will ever get to wear wedding veils so why not make your wedding veil as special as you are!

There are so many wedding veil lengths and styles to choose from including veils on combs, Chapel veils, Cathedral Wedding veils and short wedding veils…so how to you choose which veil is right for you?

Wedding Veil Length

Confused about how long your wedding veil should be? Depending on the length, wedding veil names can be somewhat confusing, so here are some guidelines that may be helpful.

Short Wedding Veils

short wedding veils

Short veils like shoulder length and elbow length wedding veils can be more casual and fun. A Shoulder Length wedding veil is usually around 21” - 24” long and falls to the shoulder. An Elbow Length wedding veil is about 28” – 30” long and falls around the elbow.

Long Wedding Veils

Long veils such as chapel veils and cathedral wedding veils tend to be more formal.Floor Veils are usually about 65” long, Chapel Veils fall about 90” and Cathedral Wedding Veils are typically veils of 108” or more and usually fall past the train of the gown.

Medium Length Wedding Veils

fingertip veils

Veils that fall somewhere in-between, such as waist length and fingertip length wedding veils are usually more versatile. Waist Length wedding veils fall 34” – 35” to about waist level and Fingertip Veils, as the name implies, are 40” – 42” long veils that fall to the fingertips.

Veils on Combs - Placement

veils on combs

When wearing veils on combs, where the wedding veil falls will depend not only on your height, but also on where, on your head, you place comb. If you wear your veil forward, towards the front of your head, it will take a few inches from the length of the veil. If you wear your veil low on the back of your head, below your up-do, the veil length increases accordingly.

Other Wedding Veil Considerations

Wedding Veil Width - Veils on combs typically come in 3 standard widths: 54”, 72” and 108”. The wider the veil, the more volume it will have at the top, where it attaches to the comb. Narrower veils will fall almost flat, depending on the cut of the veil and the width of the comb. A wider comb (5”, for example) will help give the veil a flatter appearance, while a smaller comb (such as 3”) will give the veil more height and “pouf”.

Veil Edge Styles & Embellishment –When it comes to veils on combs, what typically sets them apart is the embellishment. The selection of edges is endless, ranging from a cut edge with no embellishment to a heavily beaded edge. In-between, the possibilities may include a serge edge, beading, pearls, rhinestones, crystals, satin ribbon, lace, and any combination of these. Pearls, crystals, beads and rhinestones are not limited to the veil edge. These embellishments can be scattered throughout the entire veil. Be sure to select a wedding veil that complements your dress and reflects your personal style.

Wedding Veil Layers/Tiers –Veils on combs may have one or two tiers. The simplest cut is a single tier oval cut. This means that the wedding veil is cut in an oval shape and there is one layer of veiling. A second tier is typically the same shape, but usually slightly shorter. It can be used as a blusher, which is worn over the bride’s face during the marriage ceremony, then flipped to the back. Blusher length can be slightly shorter than the first tier or it can be significantly shorter. You can also have the same embellishment on both tiers or you can keep your veil blusher simple.

Wedding Veil Cut – The cut of a veil refers to the shape.

Oval Cut Veils – The oval cut is the most common veil shape.
Circle Cut Veils – A circle cut veil is a circular piece of veiling, attached to the comb close to the center of the circle, creating 2 tiers.
Angel Cut Veils – An angel cut veil is heart shaped so that the sides hang loosely around the front and there is a point in the back.

Wedding Veil Color – Most veils are available in white, diamond white and ivory. Diamond white is slightly off-white, but not as deep as ivory.  If your wedding gown is natural silk, a diamond white wedding veil will match beautifully.
