The wedding money bag started out as a cultural custom with origins dating back to Poland and Italy in the early 1900’s.
In Poland, as part of the traditional wedding reception, male guests generally offered a dollar (or some larger denomination) for the privilege of dancing with the bride in the “dollar dance.” The “money dance” as it is also known, has evolved into a popular wedding entertainment tradition in many cultures today and the wedding money bag is an essential part of this tradition.
In the Italian tradition, the family and friends of the bride and groom would generally offer cash gifts as a means of helping out the newly married couple to start a new life together. A wedding money bag or money “box” was used to collect the cash donations.
It is not uncommon for today’s wedding money bags to be filled with both cash and gift cards.
